‘to be percieved’

i am currently working on my year 4, Glasgow School of Art studio practice, carrying my theme from last year, however I intend to further expand on this project beyond GSA, and into different material investigation.

A collection of work using my own body, mind and domestic setting to depict mystruggles with mental illness, namely anxiety and agoraphobia.
The idea of ‘to be percieved’ comes from the anxiety and fear of being socially acknowledge by others, and the almost paranoid and inexplicatble unease of social anxiety.
As well as encapsulating many other realted themes within the self-portaits, such as queer sexuality, body image , isolation, and the chaos and mess associate with mental illness, both physically and mentally.
The tearing and combination of layers realtes back to the themes of being percieved, distracting with vulnerability, while also allowing me to play with and incorporate abstarct and more painterly aspects into my work.
Made using a combination of media, but most noticable graphite, graphite powder, watercolour, ink and white goache/temperapaste for highlights. My prefered selection.
